Interactive Whiteboards a positive learning tool!

As a SUN student, I am still at school and have been lucky enough to have used an Interactive Whiteboard. What is this, you may ask? According to CQU (2009), an Interactive Whiteboard is a device which "allows the teacher and students to interact directly with a screen and not through a keyboard and mouse". There is a picture of one embedded to the right.

Basically interactive whiteboards look very similar to a normal whiteboard, but are more like a giant, touch sensitive computer. They have educational games stored on them (can also be created) which saves teachers valuable hours of time in planning lessons. Students are able to use the educational activities by using a touch pen (a magnet) on the screen. These whiteboards have amazing educational capabilities.

There are many benefits of using them in education. They can help students to gain confidence with technology as they become very familiar with the interactive whiteboard and its several functions and features. They are also more likely to 'engage' in learning rather than be 'enraged' as the learning is incorporating technology, something very familiar to young children and generally that they want to learn about (Prensky, 2001).

There is evidence to suggest that these whiteboards have engaging students. For example, according to Central Queensland University (2009),

"all students have become very protective of the interactive whiteboard technology and very quickly educate relief teachers who attempt to use markers or magnets. Teachers who have been contemplating leaving the profession because of their student's lack of engagement now find that they look forward to coming to work and that the previous behaviour management issues are now non-existent. Students now show great ownership of the learning process and actively participate--they even experiment and learn independently when teachers are away from class. Teachers are now working more collegially and are sharing resources and expertise.
the learning curve when learning how to use the whiteboard technology is steep. All teachers have embraced the technology because they have seen the difference in the students and their colleagues. The teachers observed that their students appear to be learning more quickly. The teachers' workloads were decreased as a result of being able to save their learning objects and from sharing other teachers work, they were replacing their previous practice with the new and not using the technology as an additional resource."

I just wanted to share that with everyone because I personally find this very amazing! It really shows how if teachers can find ways to connect with their students and engage them, there can be so many benefits.

Experimenting

As I am getting more confident with blogging and the online technologies I have been exploring, I thought I would try something new. After exploring other blogs, adding comments, etc. I found that virtual i-pods could be uploaded to blogs with songs on a playlist. As the course e-learning is all about new technologies and incorporating them into teaching, I thought I would embed an ipod with some children's songs.

Finally Figured it Out!

I have finally figured out how to upload my slide show that I posted on Slideshare. I described the interactive PowerPoint game in a previous post where I thought I had embedded the PowerPoint, but it turned out I was not posting the correct code. I can definitely say this has been a learning experience and my e-learning joinery is progressing rapidly.

Just take note that from this blog, you cannot actually play the interactive counting game for children as you can only view slides, clicking the answers and next buttons will not work. Apologies! Comments welcome :)

*Please note that if this VoiceThread file does not show, it is because VoiceThread is not a public site, however I still wanted to attempt embedding it to trial if it would work. Apologies

Experimenting on Voicethread

After creating a free, easy to set up account on Voicethread I uploaded an image that I edited on Picnik. The process of uploading pictures and video files is simple and takes about one minute (longer for larger files). The picture I uploaded can be seen via the below link;

I've been experimenting with the site and finding it a bit difficult to work out as it is completely unfamiliar to me, however will embed it in a post once I work out how to! This site could be used in teaching with the older students, as they could really improve their ITC skills and communicate with distance education students, teachers, etc. The only issue with this would be privacy, so teachers would have to ensure the students accounts are private. I shall continue to explore this site and keep you posted! Happy blogging,

Carissa :)

Using Youtube

Yesterday I was exploring TeacherTube for educational videos and found millions. Today I decided that although I am already familiar with YouTube, to search it for educational videos and see what I could find. Surprisingly, there are many educational videos that are not on TeacherTube. I found one particular video that really relates to this blog and the technologies used. I found it to be really interesting in showing how so many technologies can be incorporated into everyday teaching. Feel free to check it out :)

Music in Education

I have been exploring Royalty-Free Music; Music FAQ; & Music Licences from INCOMPETECH and found a few pieces that could be incorporated into learning.

After exploring this site, I have found that there is potential for educational songs to be used in teaching in a few ways. For example, a teacher could ask the children to listen to a song and ask the students to explain what they think the artist was trying to communicate and was feeling at that time, ect. Also, a music teacher for primary school could play all the different types of music; jazz, classical, pop, rock, strings, etc. to the children to show them the differences between them.

The music on this site is all free to use and download straight to computers, so could very easily be downloaded and used in a classroom environment as a resource. Music being introduced into early education is a fantastic idea, which is most likely why alot of primary schools have music as a subject for their students.
